What is Mindfulness?

‘Mindfulness is about paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally.’ Jon Kabit -Zinn. We use this as our working definition throughout all our programmes.

What is the difference between mindfulness and meditation?

Mindfulness is a state of being and describes the quality and orientation of our attention. Our programmes use meditations to practice the art of mindfulness.

I’ve read that mindfulness can make changes to the brain, is this true?

Emerging research on neuroplasticity indicates that we can potentially make changes to our brain circuitry. Research in this area is still in its infancy.

I’ve never done anything like this before? How do I know if this is right for me?

You are welcome to contact us and we can help you decide whether the programme is right for you. We specify with each of the programmes who the course may be suitable for.

Before beginning the 8 Week MBSR programme you will have a chance to speak with an educator who can help you decide if the programme is right for you at this time.

I’ve done some mindfulness and meditation. Which of your programmes is best for me?

It really comes down to individual preference, what you would like to potentially get out of the programme and also the time you are able to commit. Our educators can help discuss what programme might suit you best at this time.

Why do MBSR or 8 Week Mindfulness Programme and not a 4 week course?

MBSR or the 8 Week Programme is a full immersion programme and follows a specific framework created by Jon Kabit-Zinn who founded the original, globally recognised MBSR programme. Making changes to lifestyle and habits takes time and the 8 week programme allows this process to start to unfold. A four week course may provide a glimpse of what mindfulness could offer but the 8 week programme offers an in depth experience and helps maximise your outcomes.

Do I have to sit for hours and hours meditating cross-legged?

No, we do offer lots of mindfulness practices and meditations but you can choose to sit on a chair, sit on the floor or cross legged if this is what you choose. Some we might do standing, walking or lying - its really up to you.

Is mindfulness religious based?

Mindfulness is secular and does not follow any particular religious teachings.

Class sizes can vary depending on the course, but typically will have 16 participants.

What support is there available between classes?

Class contact of 2.5 hours for 8 weeks. In addition participants are expected to commit to a daily practice of approx. 45 minutes. In week 5 or 6 of the programme there is a 7 hour intensive which is a valuable opportunity to consolidate and explore new practices.
